Company Background

Justin M. Hartings, Ph.D.

Dr. Hartings is the President and CEO of Biaera Technologies.  Originally trained at Yale University as an optical physicist specializing in aerosols, he was assigned to USAMRIID’s Aerobiology group in 2000 as a captain in the US Army.  At USAMRIID, Dr. Hartings served the Aerobiology Department as the Chief of Aerosol Services and later as the Director of Aerosol Research.  As the Aerosol Service Chief he was responsible for supervising all of the aerosol exposures at USAMRIID to include training of staff, equipment acquisition and maintenance, quality control, coordination with investigators, and dose calculation and reporting.  In this capacity he supervised hundreds of aerosol studies involving rodents, rabbits, and NHPs using the full complement of BSL-3 and BSL-4 level select agents.

After leaving active duty service in 2002, Dr. Hartings continued his work at USAMRIID as Director of Aerosol Research.  Dr. Hartings led a technology development effort that produced four aerobiology-related U.S. Patents/Applications.  The cornerstone of this program was development of the Automated Bioaerosol Exposure System (ABES).  The ABES is the computer-controlled USAMRIID aerobiology control system still in use at the Institute.  With nine ABES systems deployed throughout USAMRIID’s Aerobiology Laboratories, the ABES system has become the industry standard for aerobiology studies.  Now available commercially as the AeroMP Aerosol Management System, Biaera Technologies is the sole worldwide license-holder and distributor of this technology.

In addition to serving as President of Biaera, Dr. Hartings remains on the staff at USAMRIID as a research consultant to the Center for Aerobiological Sciences.  In this capacity he continues his work developing new technologies for aerobiology studies, and remains active in working with investigators on their aerobiology research protocols.
